Zotec Partners’ Edward R. Gaines Receives 2017 Meritorious Service Award from the Emergency Department Practice Management Association

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Zotec Partners, a national leader in revenue cycle and practice management services to emergency department groups and physicians, announces its Chief Compliance Officer in Emergency Medicine, Edward (Ed) R. Gaines, III, JD, received the Emergency Medicine Department Practice Management Association (EDPMA) 2017 Meritorious Service Award. Randy Pilgrim, MD, FACEP (EDPMA board member and past Chair) presented the award to Mr. Gaines during the 2017 EDPMA Solutions Summit during a special awards ceremony. The Meritorious Service Award, selected by the EDPMA Awards Committee of board members and staff, is given to individuals who have shown leadership, productivity, and dedication to the EDPMA. Mr. Gaines is a founding member of the EDPMA, also currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors and an Executive Committee member with the Association.

The EDPMA is one of the nation’s largest trade associations supporting the delivery of emergency medical care to all Americans, providing advocacy and educational resources to Emergency Department physician groups and their practice partners. Together, EDPMA’s members deliver (or directly support) health care for over half of the 136.3 million patients who visit U.S. emergency department’s each year. The Association’s members include physician groups, revenue cycle management (RCM) companies, and others who support health care provided in the Emergency Department and work collectively to deliver services often unmet elsewhere.

Elizabeth Mundinger, Executive Director of EDPMA says of the award recipient, “Ed Gaines is well recognized among his EDPMA colleagues as one of the most generous with his time and expertise, significantly improving our strategy and letters – often in an email sent while he is boarding a plane. He willingly shares his depth of knowledge through entertaining presentations and workshops. I don’t know where he gets the energy to do so much for all of us. This award is well deserved.”

“It’s been 20 years since the EDPMA was founded, and I can honestly say that all of the wonderful people who make up this Association have lived out the mission to advocate for Emergency Department physician groups and their partners in order to enhance quality patient care through operational excellence and financial stability,” notes Ed Gaines. “I am incredibly honored to receive the EDPMA Meritorious Service Award, and I will continue to work with the EDPMA to advocate on and monitor legislative and regulatory proposals on the federal and state level that may impact the quality care of patient care provided in the Emergency Department.”

T. Scott Law, founder and CEO of Zotec Partners adds that it is always the company’s goal to support its professionals in the pursuit of industry improvement and advocacy. He says, “Ed’s dedication and passion for our emergency medicine clients and colleagues, paired with the application of his extensive experience and legal knowledge continue to make a positive impact in the emergency medicine industry. We are very proud of his work and will continue to support his involvement with the EDPMA.”

Mr. Gaines has more than 23 years’ experience specializing in emergency medicine. He and his colleagues established the first voluntary corporate compliance program in the emergency department coding and billing industry in 1994. Mr. Gaines is responsible for compliance and coding quality assurance and training for Zotec’s emergency medicine clients. He is actively involved with Zotec’s clients in the areas of Medicare fee schedule, CPT coding, MACRA/MIPS and balance billing issues at the state and federal levels. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honors from Alma College and graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law with a Juris Doctor.

Ed is a member of the ACEP Reimbursement Committee and is a co-founder, past chairman, current Board of Directors and Executive Committee member of the EDPMA. His honors and awards include: ACEP Honorary Membership Award 2012; EDPMA’s Founder’s Award 2008; ACEP’s Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award 2008; NC ACEP’s Emergency Medicine Outstanding Advocate Award 2006 and he was named a Fellow in the Health Ethics Trust in 2000. He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association’s Health Law Section, the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) and the Bar of the United States Supreme Court.
